Ben Hur

Yesterday I went through Ben Hur. I don't recall having ever seen a slower, more boring movie. The chariot race was ok, but aside from that, there was a complete lack of excitement. Judah's relationship with Esther made no sense to me whatsoever at all, and each scene took forever to start: You would see two people facing each other at opposite ends of a hall for say, and they would stand there and look at each other for a minute or two, literally! Before they even started either talking or walking towards each other, or if you were lucky, both at once. If I had a good DVD editing program I could cut 25% of the time out and still have a comprehensive movie, reducing it from the three some hour mammoth that it is to something more manageable. Also, the plot was dull and straight forward. A good plot should not be completely comprehended the first time. There should be some reason to go back and watch it again, and you should enjoy it more the second time through. Most of my favorite books are like that as well. (Dune is a notable example.) At the end of the show I was left wondering what the behemoth was doing parading around with eleven academy awards. My own life is more exciting, which makes me wonder: if that is the case, why am I posting about it?

Mr. McCullough,
Not only do you have a wierd hair style and a strange (to say the least) sense of humore; but you also have a terible tast in movies. Ben Hur happens to be one of my favorite movies and I consider your contentions and claims proposterous. You complained of long pauses, they make the movie dramatic. Ben Hur is a drama and you complaining about this is like complaining that Hitchcock is suspensful. Ferthermore, have you ever considered how confusing movies would be if all pauses were eleminated. It was awarded all those Acadamy Awardes because it had wonderful acting, stupendous sets, and one of the best film scores of all time by Miklos Roza.
Your post is so ridiculos that I will refrain from going on any further.
Just remember you may not know ME, but I always know YOU.

PS. I will speak more of the last paragraph on Andrews blog for all to see.

try watching Pride and Prejudice (the six hour version). . .but I agree, Ben Hur was pretty awful.

PS. . .Hey anonymous. . .before you go criticizing Graham's taste. . .you should learn how TO SPELL!!!

Graham said...

I had a chance to do just that, but I passed it up... I still can't figure why... I think the bad spelling is a pretense, but I am not sure, although it is possibly the first time I have ever been attacked intellectually (if I may go so far as to call such criticism intellectual) by someone with inferior spelling.

I totally agree with every word the Phantom of the Kitchen said. You have no taste in movies. Ben Hur is a legendary movie. It's tied with LOTR and Titanic for most academy awards. It's awesome.

Do you need any other good movies to watch? Try "Gods and Generals" or "Gettysburg" which are possibly the best movies I've ever wached.
Madame Christina,
Thank you for your most kind support.

Gods and Generals and Gettysburg have to be two of my favorite movies. they are so totally awesome!! so, if you guys were fightin' in the Civil War what would you be? Johnny Reb or billy Yank? I'm totally a Johnny Reb.

that was not an acquantance of yours. Less was it Abraham. I love it when the high and mighty bite the dust. This is not the first time that this individual has helped you either...

If I was fighting in the civil war I would have been drafted. I care not for either side of the conflict. Here you see my true colors, or the lack there of. The civil war was one of histories greatest stupidities, and there has been plenty of time for chaos to settle on the plannet. I have no aversion to guns and combat and whatnot, I spent five or so hours yesterday blowing things up on a computer. I do however have an aversion to dying for no cause whatsoever, and killing others for that same cause.

Jonny Reb! YEEEEEE-HAWWWWWWW!!!!!!!!!

is this because you actually believe in state's rights and slavery, or because you just feel like rebelling?

Christina said...

I do agree that the civil war is one of the most stupid things ever but the South was standing up for their rights. Slavery has nothing to do with the issue of North vs. South. I do believe in war as a diffense. I believe that there should have been a war for Independence, Civil War, World War I and II, and the Iraqi wars. But I don't think that there should war for no reason or just for power.

heh, well, i am living in the present and the civil war is in the past so in short, i really don't have to take a side do I?

I am against all but digital killing (which I partake of deeply) To my mind, wars are just downright dumb. World Wars I and II were justifiable in that free men were fighting and dying for justice and freedom. The Civil war was downright dumb because there didn't have to be a war. The north was stuborn and didn't want to look bad, so they kept all their troops in the south. The south on the other hand beligerently attacked them, when it all could have theoretically happened peacefully. The Iraq war is a paranoid power hungry freak attacking harmless third world countries with his top of the line special forces troops, and then he complains about the terrorism when organized gurula forces attack back, which is the only way to fight a superior force of troops. The guy has no perspective. The napolionic war is justifiable as well, for the same reasons as the world wars, just in case you wanted my oppinion on that too.
